Claim Situation
VA changes in the news this fall, and how to tell proposed from final
· Claim Situation
The situation
This fall brought headlines about proposed rating changes and VA deadlines. Most of it is not yet law. Here is how to track what matters.
Proposed vs. final
- A proposed rule is open for comment and does not change ratings.
- Only a final rule published in the Federal Register changes the rules, on its effective date.
- Bills in Congress change nothing until signed.
Where to check
- Federal Register: VA
- Regulations.gov for comments.
- Congress.gov for bills.
Sleep apnea and tinnitus
Proposals to change how these are rated have drawn heavy comment. Check our sleep apnea and tinnitus guides.
What to do
Don't panic-file. Make sure the claim is ready, use an Intent to File, and follow VA Updates.
