SMC-K: extra pay for loss of use, including erectile dysfunction
· Claim Situation
The situation
SMC-K is a flat monthly amount paid on top of your regular rating for loss or loss of use of certain organs or limbs. It's often missed because people don't want to bring it up.
What it is
Under 38 CFR 3.350(a), SMC-K is paid for anatomical loss or loss of use of a creative organ, a hand, a foot, both buttocks, an eye's vision, hearing in both ears, voice, or breast tissue, among others. It can be paid at any rating level, even 0%.
Most common: sexual dysfunction
- Erectile dysfunction secondary to diabetes, prostate treatment, spine conditions, or medications for PTSD or depression.
- Female sexual arousal disorder from service-connected causes.
How it's rated
- ED itself is often rated 0%, but SMC-K is still paid.
- You need a diagnosis and evidence linking it to service or a service-connected condition.
How to claim
- Claim the condition and ask for SMC-K.
- Tell your doctor; get it charted.
- Get an opinion if secondary.
How much
Amounts change each December. See VA's SMC rate tables.
Won't affect other ratings
A legitimate SMC-K doesn't reduce other ratings. See SMC overview.
