Your VA payments: direct deposit, payment history, and missing payments
· Federal Register / VA.gov · Free guide
Why now
On Oct 30, 2026 VA published a Privacy Act notice (91 FR 68621) modifying system of records 13VA047, now called "Consolidated Enterprise Resource Planning Systems including Financial Reporting and Warehousing—VA." It covers payment processing and benefit payments, and the records include banking details. VA says the routine-use changes follow Executive Order 14249 on protecting federal payments from fraud, including screening for improper payments (like Treasury's Do Not Pay system). Comments are due Nov 30, 2026, and the changes take effect that day unless revised. Nothing changes about how you get paid. It's a good time to check your payment settings.
See your payment history
Sign in to VA.gov payment history to see past payments for disability compensation, pension and education. Survivors can see DIC and survivors pension. In your VA.gov profile you can also turn on a text alert for each recurring disability or pension deposit. See 2027 VA rates for what to expect.
Update direct deposit
Change your bank info in your VA.gov profile for compensation, pension, education and Foreign Medical Program payments. You need your routing and account numbers. You can also call 800-827-1000 (TTY 711, Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–9 p.m. ET), go to a VA regional office, or use form SF-1199a if you don't have internet or a phone. Some programs (like caregiver stipends) use their own systems.
Late, missing or returned payment
- Check VA.gov payment history first, then confirm your bank and routing numbers are right.
- If a payment is missing or wrong, or your account looks off, call VA right away at 800-827-1000.
- If you closed the account, the bank will send the payment back to VA. Update direct deposit before your next payment.
- Seeing less than expected? It may be a debt offset (below).
How retro pay arrives
VA says if your decision gives you at least a 10% rating, your first payment should come within 15 days. If it doesn't, call 800-827-1000. Past-due (retro) pay usually comes as a separate deposit to the account on file, so check your direct deposit before the decision arrives. Your decision letter shows the effective date and amounts.
Spot direct-deposit hijack scams
"Payment redirection" is when a scammer uses your personal info to change your deposit to an account or prepaid card they control (VBA fraud prevention).
- VA won't ask for your bank info, VA.gov login, or PIN by phone call, text or email you didn't expect. Hang up and call VA yourself at a number on VA.gov.
- Don't share your National Contact Center PIN. Set up a VA security PIN to protect your direct deposit.
- Don't send VA benefits into a relative's or caregiver's account unless they're court-appointed or a VA fiduciary.
- Report fraud to VSAFE: 833-38V-SAFE (833-388-7233).
Offsets from VA debts
If you owe VA (often an overpayment) and don't pay or ask for help in time, VA can keep part or all of your monthly benefit to pay it down, called offsetting (VA debt management). Delinquent debts can also go to Treasury's Offset Program, which can take tax refunds and other federal payments. Call the Debt Management Center at 800-827-0648 (TTY 711) before paying so you don't pay twice. You can ask for a waiver, payment plan or dispute. See Got a VA debt letter?
